about us
The development of basebox is based on several years of work on digital health innovations for Charité. A recurring obstacle became apparent: medical professionals wanted to use AI for more accurate diagnoses, but critical patient data was not allowed to leave the protected environment of the clinic. Compliance requirements prevented innovations in decision support.
The widespread availability of generative AI has exacerbated this existing conflict for all regulated organizations with critical data. Government agencies, hospitals, financial institutions, and defense organizations need AI capabilities but cannot use cloud offerings due to the risks to critical data and legal compliance requirements.
This insight led to the creation of basebox: a secure AI stack that runs locally within the organization and integrates seamlessly into existing IT environments. The technology is ISO 27001 certified and enables legally compliant, GDPR-compliant data processing. Deployment typically takes place within days.
The founders, René Herzer and Markus Thielen, run basebox. René has been managing complex digital projects since 1998, while Markus has been developing enterprise architectures for 35 years. The founders combine deep AI expertise with decades of experience in technological concepts for regulated industries.
Purpose: Secure AI for critical data.
Vision: European AI sovereignty through complete control over critical data.
